bucking
it.
Consider that a medical miracle.

closer Danys Baez saved the first game since Eric Gagne's most recent
surgical procedure.

Kuo emerged unscatched, nothing to be taken for granted. He's a rookie by
baseball standards, but a veteran in elbow operations. He's had three, two
of
them of the severe Tommy John reconstruction variety.

Kuo concedes, not to think about the potential for another injury. But he
said Gagne, who underwent his third arm surgery Friday, gave him advice to
pitch by.

It first happened to Kuo in his professional debut in San Bernardino on

10, 2000, a game that has become something of Dodgers Minor League
folklore.
Kuo faced 10 batters that night and struck out seven. He hit a batter with
a
pitch and induced two weak grounders.

the ball. And he was doing it so easy. You see guys throwing hard like
that,
but they're grunting and working hard. He looked like a natural."

Kuo made it look so easy that few realized he struck out the final batter
with an elbow that had blow out on the previous pitch.

"A scout told me that he could have pitched in the big leagues that night,
and he was only 17," said Dino Ebel, Kuo's manager at San Bernardino and
now
the Angels' third-base coach. "But I remember that last at-bat, and he
threw
a 98-mph fastball and stepped off and shook his arm a little. He struck
the
guy out, but when he got back to the dugout he said he felt something."

Kuo's next appearance was on Dr. Frank Jobe's operating table for what
would

only seven games each of the next two seasons, but the arm never felt
right,
leading to an operation after the 2002 season to remove scar tissue.

only three games and was shut down again.

September appearances for the Dodgers, posted a 6.75 ERA, but struck out
10
in 5 1/3 innings. He appears to be the most dominant left-handed reliever
the
Dodgers have developed since Steve Howe.
